Blessing of SCJ Community in Berlin : On February 16, 2013, the Priests of the Sacred Heart inaugurated a new international community in Berlin, Germany. Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki blessed the community during a ceremony attended by over 250 people. In a city where more than 60% of the population lists no religious affiliation, the new SCJ community is a counter-cultural island. It includes two Brazilians, two Poles and two Germans. The team will do traditional parish ministry and pastoral care at a nearby university and clinic, as well as ministry to Berlin’s Portuguese immigrant community. However, Fr. Wladyslaw, who is chaplain to a local ER unit, said that it isn’t the ministry itself that is unique but instead, the commitment of the team to do ministry as an international religious community, based in Dehonian spirituality. “We are not ministering as individuals, we are ministering together as a religious community. It is an important signal to those discerning a vocation. We are a religious community and they will see us living that.”

Euro Meeting Albino, March 7 : Thursday, March 7, was the final day of meetings at the European Conference in Albino. Fr. Stefan Tertünte of the German Province set the tone for the day with his presentation on "The Social Commitment of Fr. Dehon in His Time, Understood in Our Days." Reflecting on what he presented, and on the prior days' work, participants tried to answer the question "In the context of the new faces of poverty and inequality in Europe, what can we, as Dehonians, do? Fr. Heiner Wilmer, provincial superior of Germany and chairperson of the European superiors, was the main celebrant at the closing Mass.

Euro Superiors Meeting Albino, March 6 : Moving from Tuesday’s focus on the esthetic aspects of the spirituality of the Sacred Heart, participants at the European Major Superiors Meeting in Albino spent Wednesday reflecting on the practice of devotions. In the morning they boarded a bus to Bergamo, the birthplace of Pope John XXIII, where they heard a presentation on the lifelong significance of devotions in the pope’s life. In the afternoon the discussion was brought home by Fr. Fernando Rodrigues da Fonseca who spoke about the devotional aspects of Sacred Heart spirituality, in particular, how the devotion was embraced not only by Fr. Dehon, but by Pope John XXIII, who was consecrated to the Sacred Heart on the day of his baptism. Reflecting on what they heard, participants talked about devotion as it is practiced today and how it could look in the future.

European Major Superiors Meeting, March 5 : “The Heart of Christ in the Future of Europe,” is the theme of a March 4-8 meeting of Dehonians in Albino, Italy. Participants include the major superiors and delegates of 14 European entities, the U.S. Province and the General Curia. It is in part a continuation of discussions begun at the October 2011 conference in Clairefontaine on secularity. During this meeting in Albino, Dehonians will try to link SCJ spirituality and Vatican II with the present reality of Europe. The first full day of activities began on Tuesday with a visit to Concesio, the birthplace of Pope Paul VI. There, participants visited the Associazione Arte e Spiritualità which holds an extensive collection of modern art. They began their visit with a presentation by by Eugeno de Caro on “The Aesthetics of Pope Paul VI” and his passion for art. Why start a conference on spirituality with a visit to an art museum? Pope Paul VI sums it up with his closing comments at Vatican II: “The Church has long since joined in alliance with you [artists]. You have built and adorned her temples, celebrated her dogmas, enriched her liturgy You have aided her in translating her divine message in the language of forms and figures, making the invisible world palpable. Today, as yesterday, the Church needs you and turns to you. She tells you through our voice: Do not allow an alliance as fruitful as this to be broken. Do not refuse to put your talents at the service of divine truth. Do not close your mind to the breath of the Holy Spirit.”

Meeting of Dehonian Bishops Jan. 10 : There are currently 25 Dehonian bishops and cardinals. In a rare meeting, all but a few of these men are together January 10-15 at the Generalate in Rome. The congregation’s 25 bishops and cardinals serve in Africa, Asia, Europe and South America. They include former members of the General Curia, such as Mons. Virginio Bressanelli, general superior from 1991 – 2003, who is now archbishop of Neuquen, Argentina. The congregation’s most recently named bishop, Mons. Claudio Dalla Zuanna, was vicar general when he was named archbishop of Beira, Mozambique. Some, such as Mons. Adam Musialek, are missionaries who became bishops of an adopted homeland. He now serves as bishop of De Aar, a diocese where the Polish SCJ has spent most of his years of ordained ministry. Others, like Mons. Tomé Makhwéliha, are indigenous leaders, signs that the Church is truly becoming a Church of its people and not simply a faith structure transplanted from Europe. October 2012 Ordination Dom Claudio Dalla Zuanna : Fr. Claudio Dalla Zuanna, SCJ, former vicar general of the congregation, was ordained archbishop of Beira, Mozambique, on October 7, 2012. Thousands filled a stadium in Beira for the event which lasted over four hours. Crowds followed the new archbishop literally from the moment his plane touched down. “A crowd of at least 500 were at the airport, welcoming him with drums and dance,” said one of the SCJs there for the ordination. Well-wishers joined the archbishop in a procession through the city to the archbishop’s residence. Secretary General in India 2012 : Fr. Heru Ismadi, secretary general, had a whirlwind tour of the District of India after several days of workshops at Dehon Vidya Sadhan, Aluva. The week of September 3, he and Mary Gorski, communications director for the U.S. Province, teamed up to do presentations on communications (including website development, use of social media and writing skills) and on the nuts and bolts of running an administrative office in the congregation. The following week, Fr. Heru, Mary and Fr. Thomas Vinod, district superior, visited the local communities of the district. "I felt like Fr. General doing a visitation!" said Fr. Heru, noting how warmly he was received by the communities. His visit was a wonderful opportunity show off the district with snapshots; they are a window into its people and ministries.

General Conference, July 15 : Over 80 people from around the world are gathering July 15-21 in Neustadt, Germany, for “Educare,” the 8th General Conference of the congregation. The tradition of the general conference began in 1969. Held at the midpoint of a superior general’s term the themes have varied greatly, beginning with “The Renewal of the Congregation in Light of Vatican II.” The last conference was in 2006 in Warsaw, Poland; its focus was “SCJs on Mission Ad Gentes. Participants include the major superiors of each SCJ entity, along with invited guests and staff. The first night began with vespers, dinner and a lighthearted welcoming session in the Pfalzkeller (basement bar).
